You are sitting in a comfortable chair in a softly-lit room. Relaxing music is playing at a comfortable level. A therapist is speaking to you in a slow, confident, even voice. The outside world with all its troubles and cares fades into the back of your mind. You begin to drift into your own internal world, drifting away with thoughts that are pleasant and calming.
You are wide awake and aware of your surroundings, yet you somehow feel detached from it all. You could open your eyes at any time, you could even get up and walk away if you wanted to, but the experience is so pleasant that you would stay there all day if you could. You can hear every word the therapist says to you, yet the voice can sometimes seem so distant. As you turn your attention inwards, into yourself, you lose track of time, just as you do when you are lying in bed relaxing (but not asleep). Although feeling somewhat detached, you remain in full control of yourself. You are having a typical hypnotic experience.
Hypnosis is becoming increasing popular; unfortunately, this is partly due to the popular stage shows. These shows have popularised the phenomenon, but have also led to people getting the wrong idea about what hypnosis actually is and how it works; in particular, hypnosis shows can give the observer the impression that hypnosis is some kind of sleep, some kind of magical mind control. The description given in the introductory paragraph (above) refutes this myth. Therefore, any person who proudly proclaims that 'nobody could get me under', or 'I would not let anyone control my mind' is demonstrating that he or she has the wrong idea about hypnosis. The information provided below will give an explanation of what hypnosis really is, as well as dispelling most of the commonly-held myths about the subject.
It is unfortunate that such an effective tool is shrouded in totally undeserved fears, myths and mysteries. Hypnosis is a totally natural state of mind and a pleasantly relaxing experience. Hypnosis is not sleep; when we are in hypnosis, we are usually more aware of what is taking place than usual, and our senses typically function more efficiently than normal. We are fully able to communicate, move, and could even get up and walk away should we want to! Nobody could ever be made to do anything they did not want to do.
What takes place in a hypnosis session is normal, non-magical and has predictable results. Most people will enter hypnosis automatically, and will do it several times a day when, for example, daydreaming, meditating, reading a book or watching television. It is simply a state of focused relaxation (although you do not necessarily need to be relaxed to enter hypnosis). Thus, if you have the commonly-held doubt: 'can I be hypnotised?', then forget it! If you want to enter hypnosis, then you certainly can, and you can do it quite easily. The only people who cannot be hypnotised are those who are drunk, high on drugs, very young children or a person with a severe learning disability. Therefore, if you can read this paragraph, you can be hypnotised!
In a way, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis; I am merely a catalyst who provides you with the opportunity to enter hypnosis if you want to. If you are ready and willing to enter hypnosis, and you follow my simple instructions during the session, then there is no power on earth that can stop you from being hypnotised. Of course, if you are totally determined to prove me wrong and resist being hypnotised, then of course, you will prove me wrong and you will not enter hypnosis. However, such behaviour would be a rather expensive way to make a point!
During a therapy session, I will use my voice to induce you into the beautiful, natural state of mind known as hypnosis. Although you are likely to feel a sense of mental and physical relaxation and your memory may well be enhanced, it is worth remembering that there is no such thing as a hypnotised feeling; each person experiences hypnosis in their own way. There are no flowing robes or swinging watches – just a caring, reassuring manner, and the expertise to give you the solution to your problem.
After the session, you'll be able to do anything (e.g. drive) you could do before the session. In fact, you will probably feel better than you have done in a long time!
